Union Jack Crown | Free crochet pattern

This pattern will be text based, as I want to get this one out fast with the Platinum Jubilee impending!

You’ll need a super chunky yarn, requiring a 10mm crochet hook. However, you want to use an 8mm hook to make the crown stiff. You’ll also need scissors and a darning needle.

I’ve used Marriners super chunky.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

The chain 2 at the beginning of each row is counted as a stitch, and the stitch at the base of it should not be worked.

Pattern

In blue: chain an amount that measures about an inch less than the circumference of the head. The chains need to be a multiple of 6. You’re better to go under the measurement of the head, than over.

Slip stitch into the first stitch to make a circle. Make sure this is not twisted.

Row 1

Chain 2, double crochet into each stitch, slip stitch to the first stitch to complete the round.

Row 2

Change to white yarn.

Chain 2, double crochet into each stitch, slip stitch to the first stitch to complete the round.

Row 3

Change to red yarn.

Chain 1, *half double crochet, skip 2, (double crochet, 2x treble crochet, chain 2, 2x treble crochet, double crochet) into the next stitch, skip 2*

Repeat between the asterisks/* for every group of six stitches. Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round to finish.

Finishing

Fasten off, sew in the tails and try it on!
